Welcome to the
International Micropigmentation Association

The International Micropigmentation Association, a subsidiary organization of the American Academy of Micropigmentation, was organized to develop certification and quality assurance programs outside the United States. The International Micropigmentation Association is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote excellence in micropigmentation, permanent makeup, and cosmetic tattooing by an international board certification exam.

The intent of the certification process of the IMA is to provide assurance to the public and to the medical profession that a certified micropigmentation practitioner has completed an accredited course of education in micropigmentation and an evaluation including an examination.

The evaluation is designed to assess the knowledge, experience and skills requisite to the delivery of high standards of quality client care in permanent makeup.

The Academy goal is to provide information and guidance to all members of the profession as they strive to keep up-to-date in knowledge and skills, and to practice competently.

Position statement: The IMA and AAM  affirm that Permanent Cosmetics/ Cosmetic Tattooing/ Micropigmentation is a separate specialty within the field of tattooing.  It involves the placement of colorants into the skin for the purpose of cosmetic enhancement, medical correction and/or aesthetic restoration.  Therefore,  there is specialized training with unique standards required in order to perform this service.

Micropigmentation: The procedure in which minute, metabolically inert pigment granules are placed mechanically or manually below the epidermis for the purpose of cosmetic and/or corrective enhancement.
